As part of the commitments of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) to the Panay Bukidnon Indigenous Peoples’ (IP) community, livestock were distributed on December 7 and 11, 2018. This is in coordination with the Department of Agriculture Region 6 (DA 6) which funded the procurement and led the distribution together with NIA.
IPs from the hinterlands of Calinog specifically from barangays Garangan, Masaroy, Guinbonyugan, Cahigon, Toyungan, Binolusan Pequeño, Supanga, Caratagan, Manaripay, Marandig and Hilwan were the recipients of the said program. Aforementioned barangays are part of the affected areas of the implementation of the Jalaur River Multi-Purpose Project Stage II (JRMP II).
Punong Barangay Jessica Celeste of Marandig said that she felt the Christmas spirit of giving upon receiving the livestock from the DA and NIA.
“These are early Christmas presents for my constituents”, she said.
She added that they are not going to waste this opportunity and that they would take good care of the livestock so they can be passed on to the next recipients.
Meanwhile, Masaroy Punong Barangay Roger Diaz said that he is grateful of NIA and DA for the distribution of livestock as additional livelihood of the IPs. On his message during one of the distributions held in Santa Regla Gym, Alibunan, he reminded the IPs that being beneficiaries have corresponding responsibilities.
Aside from livestock, NIA has been conducting livelihood trainings, facilitated the delivery of basic social services and infrastructure projects in IP communities affected by the project. These are all stipulated in the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed for the IPs consent of the project. /JP Ramon Salvilla
